Painting vs Refacing vs New Cabinets
There are a few ways to update your kitchen — repaint, reface, or go with new cabinets.
Painting is the most budget-friendly option, but it’s really just a cosmetic update. It only changes the color, and in a kitchen environment with heat, grease, and moisture, the paint may chip or peel over time if it’s not done properly. It also doesn’t fix any structural issues.
Refacing is another popular option — you keep your existing cabinet boxes and just replace the doors and hardware. It definitely improves the look, but the inside stays the same. So if the cabinets are older or lower quality, you’re basically putting new doors on an old system. You also can’t change the layout or improve storage. And in many cases, refacing can cost around 70–80% of new cabinets, since doors are actually the most expensive part.
So if you’re already investing that kind of money, most customers find it makes more sense to go with new cabinets. With new cabinets, everything is brand new — better structure, better storage, and a layout that actually works for your space.
Of course, if your cabinets are in great condition and you just want a quick refresh, painting or refacing can work. But if you’re looking for something that lasts longer and really upgrades the space, new cabinets are usually the better investment.
